Small businesses are more than storefronts - they’re the heartbeat of our communities, the testing ground for new ideas, and often the boldest storytellers in food, beverage, and lifestyle. Supporting them doesn’t have to mean grand gestures; it’s the small, consistent actions that create real impact. From over a decade working exclusively in small business, here are my top 4 tips for supporting small businesses to celebrate Small Business Week.
1. Spend Intentionally (and Locally)
Where you spend your money matters. Choosing a neighborhood café over a chain or a local boutique over a big-box retailer directly fuels entrepreneurship, job creation, and community vibrancy. Even small purchases add up and they send a signal about what kind of businesses you want to see thrive.
2. Amplify Their Story
Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful marketing tools. Share your favorite spots on socials, leave thoughtful reviews, or simply tell a friend. For small brands without massive marketing budgets, your voice can be the difference between being discovered or overlooked.
3. Show Up Online and In Person
Engagement matters. Follow, like, comment, attend events, and participate in activations. Whether it’s a soft opening, a pop-up, or a seasonal launch, showing up builds momentum and community around a brand. Presence is a powerful currency.
4. Be Patient and Invest in the Experience
Small businesses are often operating with lean teams and limited resources. A little grace goes a long way. When you choose to support small, you’re investing in craftsmanship, care, and the long-term growth of something meaningful, not just speed or convenience.
At the end of the day, supporting small business is about more than transactions; it’s about relationships. When we invest in those relationships, we help shape a more dynamic, diverse, and resilient marketplace.
